Uganda Cowries
Country: Uganda
Year Issued: 1895
Uganda’s early Cowrie stamps were produced on a typewriter by missionary Ernest Millar when proper printing equipment was unavailable. Values were expressed in cowrie shells, a currency familiar across parts of Africa. Each stamp feels personal because each character was mechanically struck rather than conventionally engraved. These makeshift issues carried letters along mission routes and across a region where transport depended on runners, boats, and difficult tracks. Corrections and uneven alignment reveal the human hand behind the system. The Cowries recall a moment when determination mattered more than polish: if communities needed mail, someone found paper, ribbon, and a typewriter—and created postage.
