Pan-American Invert
Country: United States
Year Issued: 1901
For the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, the United States issued colorful stamps celebrating modern transportation. A small number of the two-cent stamps placed the express train upside down inside its ornate frame. The error feels almost playful, but the original issue reflected genuine pride in railways that carried people, parcels, and mail across a vast country. Fairgoers bought the stamps amid illuminated buildings and technological displays, then sent postcards to friends who could only imagine the spectacle. The inverted train preserves the exhilaration of progress—and the timeless collector’s thrill of noticing that one tiny detail is wonderfully wrong.
