Isabella II First Issue
Country: Spain
Year Issued: 1850
Spain’s first adhesive stamp showed Queen Isabella II in profile and paid the basic domestic letter rate. Its introduction brought the convenience of prepaid postage to correspondence traveling between Madrid, provincial capitals, villages, and Mediterranean ports. The stamp’s restrained design would have appeared on folded letters written with careful flourishes, perhaps carrying family news, legal matters, or plans for a journey. Postal markings accumulated as the envelope moved through sorting offices and coaches. Today the stamp evokes sun-faded paper, iron balconies, and the suspense of hearing a name called when the post finally arrived.
