1856 Argentina Corrientes First Issue postage stamp

The province of Corrientes issued one of Argentina’s earliest stamps, engraving the head of Ceres by hand after a French model. Local printing created small variations from plate to plate, giving each impression a slightly individual character. These stamps moved correspondence through a river province tied to the Paraná, where boats, traders, ranches, and government offices depended on reliable news. A letter bearing this issue might have carried commercial instructions or word from a family member upriver. Its rustic engraving is part of its beauty: provincial craftsmanship serving a practical need in a young nation still knitting its regions together.
