1847 Trinidad Lady McLeod postage stamp

The Lady McLeod stamp belonged to a private steamship that carried mail between Port of Spain and San Fernando in Trinidad. Its simple white initials on scarlet paper paid for letters traveling along the island’s coast, where roads were difficult and the sea offered the quicker route. One can almost hear the paddle wheels churning warm Caribbean water as sacks of correspondence came aboard—plantation accounts, family news, shipping instructions, and perhaps a long-awaited note from someone only a few ports away. Issued in 1847, it is often regarded as the first stamp of the British West Indies. Its handmade appearance is part of its charm: a reminder that postal systems did not always begin in grand government offices, but sometimes aboard a hardworking vessel connecting communities one voyage at a time.
