Treskilling Yellow
Country: Sweden
Year Issued: 1855
Sweden’s three-skilling stamp was supposed to be green, but one surviving example appeared in the yellow-orange color reserved for another value. Discovered by a schoolboy in the 1880s, the Treskilling Yellow turned an ordinary envelope remnant into one of philately’s enduring mysteries. No one knows with certainty how many were printed or why the colors were exchanged. Its story evokes tidy Scandinavian post offices, hand-sorted letters, and a forgotten sheet slipping unnoticed into circulation. For its first owner, it was simply postage. Only decades later did its warm color reveal that even careful systems can leave behind one marvelous exception.
