Vineta Provisional
Country: German Empire
Year Issued: 1901
Aboard the German cruiser Vineta, sailors reportedly ran short of the correct three-pfennig stamps needed for printed matter. The ship’s postal officer bisected five-pfennig stamps and overprinted the halves with a new value. Whether viewed as practical improvisation or philatelic curiosity, the provisional evokes naval mail at the turn of the century: postcards written under tropical skies, news sent home from distant ports, and crewmen waiting months for replies. Its sliced design makes the solution visible. This was postage created not in a grand printing works, but in response to the small, immediate wish to send a message home.
