Norway’s First Stamp
Country: Norway
Year Issued: 1855
Norway’s first stamp displayed the national lion holding an axe, surrounded by a simple circular inscription. The four-skilling value carried ordinary letters across a country of mountains, fjords, islands, and long winter roads. Postal routes combined foot travel, horses, boats, and determination; a short distance on a map could still demand an arduous journey. The stamp’s blue color and heraldic image gave each envelope a confident Norwegian identity. It evokes a coastal household watching for a mail boat, the sound of oars near a landing, and the moment a familiar hand finally appeared on an envelope.
