Two-Cent Hawaiian Missionary
Country: Kingdom of Hawaii
Year Issued: 1851
Hawaii’s first stamps were printed for the missionaries, merchants, and island residents who wrote across the Pacific. The fragile two-cent blue issue paid the newspaper rate and became known as a Hawaiian Missionary. Imagine a thin letter leaving Honolulu beside barrels of provisions and bundles of newspapers, beginning a sea voyage measured in weeks rather than hours. The stamp’s plain typography reflects a practical frontier postal service, but the correspondence it represents carried homesickness, faith, trade, and descriptions of island life to distant families. Few survived Hawaii’s tropical climate, which makes every remaining example feel like a whisper from a vanished harbor.
