1856 British Guiana One-Cent Magenta postage stamp

When a shipment of stamps failed to arrive in British Guiana, the local postmaster authorized a temporary issue printed by a Georgetown newspaper. The one-cent magenta was rough, small, and authenticated by a postal clerk’s handwritten initials. Only one example is known today. Long before auction rooms and record prices, it carried local news in a humid river colony where imported supplies depended on uncertain ships. Its clipped corners and faded ink feel almost stubbornly ordinary. That is the nostalgia of the stamp: an improvised scrap of paper created to keep everyday messages moving, surviving while nearly everything around it disappeared.
