Early Prepaid Postage

Two Penny Blue

Country: United Kingdom

Year Issued: 1840

1840 United Kingdom Two Penny Blue postage stamp

Issued only days after the Penny Black, the Two Penny Blue paid the heavier letter rate in Britain’s new prepaid postal system. Its engraved portrait of Queen Victoria looked familiar, but its rich blue color made it easy to distinguish at a glance. The stamp appeared when railways were accelerating the mail and affordable postage was drawing ordinary people into regular correspondence. It might have carried a longer family letter, business papers, or several pages of closely written news. The Two Penny Blue remembers the satisfying weight of a substantial envelope and an era when extra words had a measurable cost—but were often worth every penny.
