Sydney Views
Country: Australia
Year Issued: 1850
The first stamps of New South Wales presented an ambitious miniature scene of Sydney, with figures representing industry and settlement beneath the motto “Sic fortis Etruria crevit.” The engraving is crowded and imperfect, yet that is exactly what makes the Sydney Views so evocative. In 1850 the harbor city was growing rapidly, and letters linked settlers with distant relatives, coastal towns, and a Britain that could feel half a world away. Picture a letter written by lamplight, describing unfamiliar birds, hard work, new streets, and the bright sweep of the harbor. Months might pass before an answer returned. The stamp preserves that mixture of distance and possibility—a tiny landscape placed on an envelope by someone building a life far from the place they once called home.
