King William III First Issue
Country: Netherlands
Year Issued: 1852
The Netherlands introduced its first postage stamps with a profile of King William III. The blue five-cent value traveled through a compact country already shaped by waterways, commerce, and busy cities. Letters moved by rail, road, and canal boat, connecting merchants, relatives, and public offices with growing regularity. The engraved portrait was official, but the envelopes beneath it carried intimate lives—birth announcements, invoices, travel plans, and news from sailors. This stamp brings to mind brick post offices, bicycles yet to come, and canal-side homes where someone paused at the window hoping the day’s mail included a familiar hand.
