Basel Dove
Country: Switzerland
Year Issued: 1845
The Basel Dove is one of the loveliest experiments of early postal history. Issued by the Swiss canton of Basel, it showed a white dove carrying a letter, embossed so the bird rose gently from the paper. Blue, crimson, and black printing made it the world’s first tricolor stamp, while the tiny message in the dove’s beak turned postage into a miniature symbol of trust. Picture a narrow Basel street in 1845, shop signs creaking above the cobbles as a local messenger hurried between homes and counting houses. To its first users, the stamp was not a museum treasure; it was simply the price of sending news across town. Today its bright little bird still evokes handwritten notes, city bells, and the pleasant suspense of waiting for a reply.
