Epaulettes Issue
Country: Belgium
Year Issued: 1849
Belgium’s first stamps showed King Leopold I wearing prominent military epaulettes, giving the issue its enduring nickname. Introduced less than two decades after Belgian independence, the stamp helped standardize communication among industrial cities, ports, and rural communities. Railways were already reshaping the country, and the mail traveled with the speed and confidence of a nation building its institutions. Behind the formal portrait were ordinary voices: factory orders, family announcements, invitations, and letters sent across new urban neighborhoods. The Epaulettes stamp feels stately, but its greatest achievement was making everyday connection more dependable.
